I love the beauty and symbolism of the lotus flower. These aquatic plants, native to regions throughout East Asia and the South Pacific, grow in slow moving waters such as ponds and flood plains and river wetlands. The roots extend deep in the water covered soil and then send up stems through the dark murky waters to reveal larger circular stems which float atop the water. They look similar to lily pads. Looking upon their undesired growing conditions, such as the muddy, murky and filthy standing water, one may be surprised by the flower which remains to be seen . The true beauty lies within, once the flowering process initiates. A round flower bud with long stem emerges from the murky waters, Once in the open, the delicate petals begin to open, revealing a colorful scented lotus. I admire how, despite their dismal growing conditions, they thrive and bring forth something wonderful. This can be a gentle reminder that beauty can emerge even when life looks unfair and flawed.
